Huddersfield 20 Castleford 32A second half power-show from Castleford Tigers blew rock-bottom Huddersfield Giants out of the water in an exciting Super League clash at the McAlpine Stadium. The Tigers roared their way to a second half success - and incoming Giants coach Mal Reilly was left in no doubts that he needs to make an injection of brute force into his soft-centred side before next season. The basement boys gave the impression they were anything but that as they started the game in determined fashion with Dean Hanger grabbing his 98th try for the club after just seven minutes. But Hanger's touchdown was already in reply to an effort from Adrian Vowles who crossed inside 200 seconds. The Tigers were anxious to avoid the ignominy of being victims of Huddersfield's only league double during a disappointing season. But with the Giants towering in the first half Danny Arnold crossed to extend their early advantage. Danny Orr and Francis Maloney restored parity for the Tigers but Huddersfield re-took the initiative when Bobbie Goulding's audacious cross-field kick in injury time found Darren Simpson who scored in the corner. It looked like being the Giants' day when Chris Orr dived over just after the break but Jon Wells pulled one back for Castleford a matter of seconds later. That was the first of three tries in seven minutes for the Tigers with Orr grabbing his second in the 50th minute to reduce the arrears to two points. Castleford were the dominant force at this stage and they took the lead for the first time in the game after 73 when Orr dived over after a breathtaking 30 yard burst. Brad Davis kicked the resulting conversion to give the Tigers a four point lead. Davis increased their advantage with a penalty before Maloney raced fully 80 metres after Matt Sturm dropped the ball near the Cas line. The Tigers were unfortunate to see a seventh try ruled out as Jason Critchley was judged to be offside as he touched down in stoppage time. Castleford Tigers 23 London Broncos 18Castleford pipped London for sixth place in Super League after staging a splendid second half recovery. The Tigers, who won 36-16 at The Stoop in June, completed a League double over the Broncos after bouncing back from 18-2 down. Both sides struggled to find any fluency in a scrappy opening 20 minutes. Broncos eventually broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when scrum half Glen Air chased his own kick to score a try which Chris Ryan converted. Castleford pulled back two points with a penalty goal from Danny Orr but London looked the sharper side and increased their lead when Air's kick created a touchdown for loose-forward Peter Gill and Ryan added his second goal. London shot further ahead three minutes into the second half when Steele Retchless sent centre John Timu in for a 55-yard try and Ryan again tagged on the goal to make it 18-2. Castleford gave themselves hope in the 52nd minute when Lee Harland's try was converted by Danny Orr to cut the gap to 10 points. Ryan was sin-binned in the 63rd minute for holding down and Castleford quickly capitalised. Brad Davis and Adrian Vowles put full back Jason Flowers in for a try and he quickly got his second after chasing Davis' kick. Orr's third goal levelled the scores at 18-18 and veteran scrum half Mike Ford, making his farewell appearance for the Tigers, then edged them ahead for the first time with a dropped goal four minutes from time. Castleford completed a magnificent fight back when Vowles went over in the dying seconds. |
